Fire in a shopping mall in Sana'a - Archive
A huge fire broke out on Tuesday evening in the Libyan Commercial Center on Algeria Street, in the center of the capital, Sana'a.
According to eyewitnesses and videos circulating on social media, the flames extended to the Magical City Park adjacent to the center, causing extensive damage to both locations.
The Libyan Center confirmed that there were no commercial losses and said - in a brief statement posted on Facebook - "A minor fire broke out in the bowling alley in Magical City (the amusement park) and was controlled by the Civil Defense Forces without any human losses."
In recent weeks, the capital Sana'a and a number of governorates have witnessed a series of repeated fires that have devoured major shopping centers, amid conflicting explanations about their causes.
While Houthi authorities attribute these incidents to electrical short circuits, previous video clips and testimonies have raised questions about the possibility of deliberate arson.
A similar fire broke out last month in a shopping mall in Shamlan, where video clips showed a person accused of deliberately setting the fire, which prompted observers to demand transparent investigations into these repeated incidents and identifying those responsible.
Activists and local residents called on the competent authorities to take urgent preventive measures to ensure the safety of shopping malls and public places, especially in light of the remarkable and worrying recurrence of these fires.
It is worth noting that the recurrence of fire incidents, whether as a result of negligence or an act of an agent, has exacerbated the fears of merchants and citizens, amid the absence of safety standards and the weak capabilities of civil defense teams to contain these incidents effectively.
