Health authorities in Taiz Governorate (southwest Yemen) have reported nearly 80 new suspected measles cases over the past ten days.
Tayseer Al-Samai, the governorate's health media official, said that health authorities in the governorate recorded 78 new measles cases, including 21 laboratory-confirmed cases, and one new death between March 13 and 23.
He added that the number of infections with the epidemic has risen to 460, including 104 confirmed cases, and three deaths since the beginning of this year.
In his latest statistics on the epidemic, released on March 12, Al-Samai revealed 382 suspected cases of measles, including 83 laboratory-confirmed cases, and two deaths related to the outbreak.
The health official attributed the resurgence of the virus to a lack of vaccinations, a lack of awareness about the importance of vaccines, and the spread of rumors.
Measles is an acute, contagious viral disease that affects children, causing serious complications that can sometimes lead to death. Its symptoms include fever, persistent cough, runny nose, eye irritation and redness, sore throat, and skin rash. It is treated with a vaccine.
Measles is one of the most common diseases in childhood, but it can also affect adults.
