Washington: Yemen Youth Net
An international network expected that the widespread food insecurity crisis in Yemen will continue until next May.
“Widespread, severe food insecurity at crisis level and worse is expected across Yemen until at least next May,” the Famine Early Warning Systems Network ( FEWS NET ) said in its latest report.
“Ongoing macroeconomic challenges – stemming from the nearly 10-year conflict amid stalled peace negotiations – continue to limit income-earning opportunities and household financial access to food, leading to food consumption gaps for millions of people,” she added.
The network stated that food insecurity levels will be at the crisis level (Phase 3 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification!), in areas controlled by the legitimate government, while the emergency phase (Phase 4 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) will continue in areas controlled by the Houthis.
The international network attributed the reasons for the worsening food crisis in government-controlled areas to the continued decline of the national currency, rising prices, and irregular payment of salaries, while the lack of job opportunities, the recent devastating floods that destroyed crops and livelihood assets, and the limited distribution of food aid, in addition to the severe and long-term effects of the conflict on financial activities and commercial operations, were the main reasons behind the worsening of the crisis in Houthi-controlled areas.
