A Greek frigate has joined the European Union's naval fleet in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, tasked with protecting and securing international shipping lanes in the region from Houthi attacks.
"We are pleased to welcome the Greek frigate HS HYDRA and her crew, who will play a crucial role in our mission by supporting freedom of navigation throughout the area of operations," the EU's Aspides naval mission said in a tweet on its X account on Sunday.
Aspedas renewed its pledge to contribute to protecting freedom of navigation, the lives of seafarers and the world's common goods.
The Greek frigate had participated in the operational area at the beginning of the European mission before leaving and being replaced by another frigate.
For about 11 months, the Aspides mission has been leading defensive naval operations to secure international shipping traffic from attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters.
We welcome HS HYDRA 🇬🇷 and her crew, who will play a crucial role in our mission by supporting the freedom of navigation throughout the area of operation.
