A new Italian frigate has joined the European Union's Red Sea fleet, tasked with protecting and securing international shipping lanes in the region from Houthi attacks.
"We warmly welcome the Italian frigate ITS MARTINENGO and its crew, who will play a crucial role in our mission by supporting freedom of navigation throughout the area of operations," the EU's Aspides naval mission said in a post on its X account on Tuesday.
She added that Aspides has a purely defensive mission, and contributes to regional stability and prosperity by protecting global common goods.
For more than 11 months, the Aspides mission has been leading defensive naval operations to secure international shipping traffic from attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters.
