The European Union Red Sea Mission (ASPEDS) has confirmed the success of its war assets in carrying out nearly 100 escort and protection operations for commercial vessels and securing their passage in the Red Sea, west of Yemen, since the launch of its naval mission in February 2023.
The mission said in a statement on Sunday, “Today we have completed 11 months and thanks to the steadfast commitment of all members of the operation, we were able to face many challenges and enhance our contribution to protecting global common goods.”
The statement added that Aspidis also contributes to the preservation of local natural resources and thus supports the regional prosperity of all coastal countries in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
She indicated in an attached video that she was able to support and protect more than 590 ships during the period.
The European mission renewed its commitment to continue implementing its tasks to maintain and enhance maritime security in the region, while giving priority to the safety of seafarers and the protection of commercial vessels.
The European Union launched its naval operation Aspides on 19 February 2024 following an escalation of Houthi attacks on Western commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and northwestern Indian Ocean.
Today Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, reached 11 months since its launch. The unwavering commitment of all EUNAVFOR ASPIDES personnel, allowed us to confront numerous challenges and solidify our contribution in protecting global common goods.
