After Trump's decision to freeze funding, dozens of USAID employees dismissed

Shaheen said she was working to bring together Democrats and Republicans to demand answers. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast said Sunday he would support moving USAID under the State Department and that there needed to be “more command and control.”

Mast did not respond to a question on CBS's "Face the Nation" about whether approval of the congressional request was necessary or whether Trump could act unilaterally.

“The purge of the State Department and other agencies and the freeze on aid were all very important and necessary steps to ensure America is secure,” he said. The State Department and USAID did not respond to requests for comment.

The development agency is the main U.S. agency providing billions of dollars in life-saving aid worldwide. The freeze on most U.S. foreign aid sent shockwaves around the world.

Among the programs at risk of cancellation are field hospitals in refugee camps in Thailand, landmine clearance in war zones and medicines to treat millions suffering from diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
