The European Union Naval Mission (ASPEDS) has completed ten months of its work protecting commercial ships from attacks by the Houthi militia in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Aspidis said in a post on the X platform that it celebrated its tenth anniversary today, Thursday.
“Thanks to the tireless dedication of our people, we have successfully addressed many challenges and strengthened our role in protecting global common benefits,” she added.
She indicated in an attached video that she was able to support and protect more than 500 ships during the period.
The European mission renewed its commitment to continue implementing its tasks to maintain and enhance maritime security in the region, while giving priority to the safety of seafarers and the protection of commercial vessels.
The European Union launched its naval operation "Aspedes" on February 19, 2024, following the escalation of Houthi attacks on Western commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the northwestern Indian Ocean, which the group says is in support of Gaza, which has been subjected to an Israeli war of extermination since October of last year.
On December 19, Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES marked its 10-month milestone. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of our personnel, we have successfully tackled numerous challenges and strengthened our role in safeguarding global common goods.
