The United Nations announced that half a million people were affected by the floods that hit Yemen during the period from July 1 to September 5.
“Heavy seasonal rains and flash floods have caused widespread damage and displacement across Yemen, exacerbating an ongoing humanitarian crisis after more than nine years of conflict,” the United Nations Population Fund said in a recent report.
"More than 500,000 people have been affected in the most affected governorates, including Al Mahwit, Al Hudaydah, Dhamar, Hajjah, Marib, Saada, Sana'a, Ibb and Taiz," he added.

The report noted that as a result, “women and girls, particularly displaced female-headed households, face increased protection risks, accounting for more than 22 per cent of those receiving emergency relief. Critical needs include emergency shelter, cash assistance, food, water and sanitation, and medical supplies to maintain health services.”
The Fund explained that the rapid response mechanism it leads has helped 50,781 families, most of whom are displaced due to climate-related shocks, while more than 212,000 people are still in need of emergency relief as they have not yet received the rapid response mechanism due to delays caused by the destruction of roads and infrastructure.
