Rejecting Trump’s Calls, Egypt and Jordan Refuse to Displace Palestinians or Encourage Their Transfer from Their Land

Displaced Palestinians wait on Rashid Street to move to northern Gaza, Sunday, January 26, 2026
Egypt and Jordan have both rejected the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, in response to a call made by US President Donald Trump on Sunday during his speech to reporters, and confirmed later after his call with the King of Jordan.
Egypt affirmed its adherence to the constants and determinants of the political settlement of the Palestinian issue, stressing that it remains the central issue in the Middle East, and that the delay in settling it, ending the occupation, and returning the usurped rights of the Palestinian people is the basis of instability in the region.
In a statement issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt expressed Egypt's continued support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land and their adherence to their legitimate rights in their land and homeland, and to the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.
The statement stressed its rejection of any infringement of these inalienable rights, whether through settlement or annexation of land, or by evacuating that land of its owners through displacement or encouraging the transfer or uprooting of Palestinians from their land, whether temporarily or long-term, in a way that threatens stability and portends further extension of the conflict to the region, and undermines the chances of peace and coexistence among its peoples.
In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to work to begin the actual implementation of the two-state solution, including the embodiment of the Palestinian state on its entire national territory and within the context of the unity of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the lines of June 4, 1967.
Jordan rejects the displacement of Palestinians
For his part, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that his country's rejection of the displacement of Palestinians is a "fixed and unchanging matter," in apparent response to US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Egypt and Jordan should receive more residents of the Gaza Strip.
Safadi added - in a press conference with the UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Sigrid Kaag - that "our priority in Jordan is to establish the Palestinians on their land."
The Jordanian minister stressed that "the solution to the Palestinian issue is a Palestinian solution, Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians," and that the two-state solution is the way to achieve peace.
Safadi stressed Jordan's aspiration to work with the new US administration, noting that his country will work with all its partners in the region to make clear progress towards achieving peace.
He added that the priority now is to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to bring aid to the residents of the Strip without interruption in preparation for the start of reconstruction operations.
US President Donald Trump said that he asked Jordanian King Abdullah II to allow his country to receive a number of residents of the Gaza Strip.
He added - in a statement to reporters on board the presidential plane - that the entire sector is now in a state of real chaos.
Trump was also quoted as saying that he would like Egypt to accept people from the Gaza Strip as well, adding that he would speak to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday about the matter.
