Violent clashes erupted on Wednesday between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in central Khartoum and Sennar State.
Since April 2023, the two sides have been fighting a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and about 15 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities, while research by American universities estimated the death toll at about 130,000.
Field sources, who requested anonymity, told Anadolu Agency that "the central Khartoum area witnessed heavy clashes with heavy weapons between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in the early morning."
She added, "Loud explosions were heard in central Khartoum and smoke rose."
For days, army forces have been advancing from more than one direction towards central Khartoum, where the presidential palace and government headquarters are located, after imposing their control over the perimeter of central Khartoum, east, north and west, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.
Eyewitnesses also told Anadolu Agency that "fierce clashes erupted between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in the governorates of Al-Dali and Al-Mazoum in Sennar State (southeast)."
Activists posted video clips on social media showing what appeared to be army soldiers inside the Al-Dali and Al-Mazoum areas, the last strongholds of the Rapid Support Forces in Sennar State, which they took control of in July 2024.
In November 2024, the army was able to regain control of most of Sennar State and its capital, Singa.
Neither the army nor the Rapid Support Forces have issued a statement regarding the situation in Khartoum and Sennar until 12:20 GMT.
For weeks now, and at an accelerating pace, the areas of control of the Rapid Support Forces have begun to decrease in favor of the army in the states of Khartoum, Al-Jazeera, White Nile, and North Kordofan.
In Khartoum State, which consists of three cities, the army now has complete control over the city of Bahri to the north, most parts of the city of Omdurman to the west, and 75 percent of the depth of the city of Khartoum, which is in the middle of the state and contains the presidential palace and the international airport, while the Rapid Support Forces are still in the neighborhoods east and south of the city.
