The General Electricity Corporation of Aden announced on Tuesday that the temporary capital will witness a complete power outage at 12 midnight, for the first time in its history, after the last available amount of fuel ran out.

The corporation said in a statement: "With great regret, the General Electricity Corporation of Aden announces that at midnight the capital will witness a complete blackout of the electricity system, after the last quantity of fuel available to operate the President's Station, which is the main source of energy in the city, ran out."

The statement stressed that the absence of a main load center such as the President's Station or the Mansoura Station prevents the use of the solar station's generation, which means that the network will stop completely, which will affect all vital sectors.

He added: "Hospitals and health facilities will be closed, water fields will stop, and commercial activities will be disrupted, which will double the suffering of citizens, who bear the burdens of this crisis amid difficult living conditions."

The statement continued: "The corporation has done everything in its power over the past few days to ensure the continuity of service, in light of the fuel shortage, and despite repeated appeals and communications to all concerned parties, the crisis has reached its peak."

The institution said, "What is happening today is a dangerous precedent in the history of Aden Electricity, which was one of the first cities in the Arabian Peninsula to receive electricity service, which it has known for decades and was an advanced model in this field, but today, for the first time, the city is facing an unprecedented total blackout that threatens the lives of its residents and paralyzes its vital facilities."

The General Electricity Corporation of Aden expressed its deep regret for this situation beyond its control, stressing that it will continue to work with all its capabilities to restore service as soon as fuel is available.

It also called again on all concerned parties to assume their national and humanitarian responsibilities and work to secure fuel urgently, to prevent the continuation of this crisis that directly affects the lives of citizens.

Yesterday, Monday, the General Electricity Corporation sent an urgent humanitarian appeal to Sheikh Amr bin Habrish, head of the Hadhramaut Tribal Alliance, to intervene immediately and give his instructions to pump crude oil to the President’s station, before its expected shutdown in the coming hours.

Last Sunday, the head of the Hadhramaut Tribal Alliance directed the leadership of the alliance’s security committee to stop the export of crude oil starting from Monday, in a move he said came “to preserve Hadhramaut’s wealth and after the people of Hadhramaut gave the Presidential Leadership Council sufficient time to decide on implementing Hadhramaut’s legitimate entitlements.”
