Cholera in Yemen
Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) launched the “Integrated Emergency Response to Cholera in Yemen” project, with the aim of enhancing medical capabilities in 26 medical facilities to combat the epidemic and limit its spread in 6 governorates, at a cost of 1,825,000 Qatari riyals.
According to the Qatar News Agency, the implementation sites were selected based on criteria including epidemic spread rates, high priority areas for response, and the most affected population density in the governorates of the capital, Sana'a, Taiz, Hajjah, Hodeidah, and Al Dhale'e.
The project provides, over a period of 3 months, comprehensive medical support to operate 5 cholera centers to treat acute watery diarrhea, and establish 21 irrigation corners to provide treatment, prevention, referral and health awareness services in targeted facilities and nearby population centers, provide medicines, medical supplies, hygiene and sterilization tools and rapid examination, cover financial incentives for health personnel, train volunteers to spread health awareness, in addition to distributing water purification filters to 200 families.
Earlier this year, the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) carried out an urgent intervention to respond to the spread of the cholera epidemic, by establishing and supporting oral rehydration corners and treatment, providing medicines, medical supplies, operating expenses and financial incentives for health personnel and referrals, in addition to enhancing community awareness in 5 medical facilities in the Mabin District in Hajjah Governorate, northwest of Yemen.
This 3-month project helped treat 6,125 people with acute watery diarrhea.
