The Masam Mine Action Center in Yemen revealed that its teams working in the field have been able to remove and dismantle about half a million mines and explosive devices in Yemen since the start of its work in Yemen in mid-2018.
This was stated by the Deputy Director General and Director of Operations, Retief Horn, during a briefing by the Military Advisor to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Yemen, Anthony Hayward, on the activities of the King Salman Center project in the city of Marib.
According to the army's website, the UN advisor listened to an explanation of the work the project has been doing in Yemeni territory since the start of its work in mid-2018 until now.
In this regard, he explained that the MASAM teams were able to remove and dismantle 469,576 mines, explosive devices, and unexploded shells.
For his part, the UN official noted the importance of the work carried out by the MASAM project to protect the lives of civilians and secure vast areas of Yemeni territory despite the challenges imposed by mines on the lives of civilians.
He stressed the importance of continuing such humanitarian projects to achieve stability in Yemen and protect the lives of civilians.
The Houthi militia deliberately planted mines and explosive devices in the areas it controlled. The Yemeni government estimates that the militia planted about two million mines, confirming that this is the most since World War II.
