A workshop for the National Investigation Committee in Taiz
On Monday, in Taiz Governorate, the National Committee to Investigate Allegations of Human Rights Violations carried out a workshop to discuss opportunities for achieving accountability and redress, and the forms of transitional justice seen by active victims and their suitability to the local and national context.
In the workshop, in which 28 participants, including judges, lawyers, jurists, unions, public federations, and victims’ associations, in addition to a group of victims, participated, the committee member, Judge Ishraq Al-Maqtari, touched on the role of formal and informal human rights protection components in reducing violations. Move towards achieving accountability and justice for the victims who stand in line waiting for justice and reparation for their harm.
Al-Maqtari stressed the importance of strengthening the efforts and attempts between the various components and the National Investigation Committee, as part of its tasks in reaching the victims, getting them justice, and preventing the perpetrators from escaping punishment, according to the Saba Agency.
The workshop discussed the commonalities that bring together the National Committee, civil society, stakeholders, and victim groups, and creating opportunities for accountability and redress for victims, in addition to the diverse and multiple roles of these components and their contribution to justice procedures, influencing them, and reflecting them in the process of building a comprehensive, effective, sustainable peace based on the protection of human rights. The participants presented proposals that contribute to strengthening the rights of victims and access to justice through the application of the law and the current possible options in accountability procedures by the national judiciary, the use of these tools by victims individually or collectively, intensifying documentation of violations, and the support of civil society, victims’ associations and stakeholders. The workshop also came up with a number of recommendations aimed at activating the right to access justice and achieving justice, implementing urgent temporary measures to reduce the suffering of victims in some types of violations, and networking between civil society, the main actors, the National Committee, and stakeholders to expand the scope of dialogue on the appropriate transitional justice strategy for all cases in the country.
