The World Health Organization announced today, Thursday, that more than 31,000 cases of cholera have been recorded, including 153 deaths, in areas under the control of the legitimate government in Yemen since the beginning of this year.
The organization said in a report on the global cholera outbreak that it recorded 31,809 cases of cholera in areas controlled by the legitimate government in Yemen, including 153 deaths, during the period from January 1 to August 25.
She added that during the month of August alone, 7,123 cases of infection and 12 deaths were recorded in the same areas.
The UN statistics did not address the epidemiological situation in areas controlled by the Houthis, who are imposing a blackout on the epidemic and refusing to disclose its statistics, despite the widespread spread of the epidemic.
It is noteworthy that the latest statistics related to the epidemic throughout the country were published by UNICEF, late last August, which reported the recording of "more than 172,023 cases of acute watery diarrhea and suspected cholera cases in Yemen with 668 associated deaths" since the beginning of the year until August 18.
The World Health Organization classifies the resurgence of cholera in Yemen and the rest of the world as a level 3 emergency.
