Riyadh: Diplomatic movement to discuss the economic crisis and enhance peace efforts in Yemen

The Saudi capital, Riyadh, has witnessed diplomatic activity over the past two days to discuss the economic crisis and enhance peace efforts in Yemen.

The office of the UN envoy to Yemen said in a statement on Tuesday that Grundberg held discussions with Saudi and international officials in Riyadh, focusing "on the need for de-escalation and a unified commitment to promoting an inclusive Yemeni-led peace process."

According to the statement, Grundberg met with "Mohammed Al Jaber, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Yemen, Commander of the Joint Forces Lieutenant General Fahd bin Hamad Al Salman, and international parties, including ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council."

Grundberg stressed the need to address the economic crisis in Yemen, emphasizing the importance of taking measures to support recovery, improve the livelihoods of Yemenis, and promote sustainable economic solutions.

The UN envoy also reviewed the efforts made to release UN staff, NGOs, civil society, and diplomats arbitrarily detained by the Houthis, and stressed the importance of continued support from regional and international partners for their release.

In the same context, Hamish Falconer, Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and the United Nations at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, met on Tuesday in Riyadh with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber.

According to a statement by Ambassador Al Jaber on the X platform, the meeting discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni crisis, reviewed the Kingdom's political, humanitarian, economic and development efforts in Yemen, and its role in supporting the United Nations' efforts to reach a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

This comes within the framework of intensive efforts aimed at exploring possible solutions to the financial crisis facing the Yemeni government, and resuming negotiations to push forward the roadmap for a political solution, which was halted due to the naval attacks launched by the Houthi militia in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden for more than a year.
