Arsenal started the new year in style as they recovered from an early goal to win 3-1 at Brentford and move into second place in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Bryan Mbemo gave the home side the lead in the 13th minute with Brentford's first attempt, but Gabriel Jesus continued his recent fine form by heading home an equaliser just before the break.

Arsenal started the second half strongly, with Mikel Merino scoring the opening goal in the 50th minute, before Gabriel Martinelli scored the third goal three minutes later, as Mikel Arteta's team tightened their grip on the match.

Arsenal moved above Chelsea and Nottingham Forest to 39 points from 19 games. Liverpool have 45 points from 18 games.

Injury-hit Brentford suffered their second home defeat of the season and sit 12th with 24 points from 19 games.
