Juventus of Italy beat PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands with a last-gasp goal, while Borussia Dortmund of Germany put one foot in the round of 16 with a 3-0 win at Sporting of Portugal on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

Substitute Samuel Mbangula scored a last-gasp winner for Juventus to secure a 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven.

The 82nd minute goal from close range gave Juventus a slim lead heading into the return leg in the Netherlands next week after PSV had come from behind in the first half.

Weston McKennie put the home side ahead with a powerful strike in the 34th minute but veteran Ivan Perisic, who turned 36 at the start of the month, levelled for PSV 10 minutes into the second half.

Both teams, who have won the Champions League before, had several chances during a smooth match and will feel they can secure qualification to the last 16 when the second leg takes place next Wednesday.

Dortmund wins by three goals

In another match, Borussia Dortmund of Germany took a big step towards qualifying for the round of sixteen, after defeating host Sporting Lisbon of Portugal 3/0.

Dortmund secured the win within eight minutes of the second half, as Guinean Serhou Guirassy scored the first goal in the 60th minute, then Pascal Gross added the second goal in the 68th minute and Karim Adeyemi completed the hat-trick in the 82nd minute.

The first goal for Gerassi came from a header, taking advantage of Julian Brandt's pass, and the Guinean international star created the second goal for his teammate Gross, who shot with his right foot into the net, then Brandt created the third goal for Adeyemi, who shot with his left foot into the net.

The two teams will meet in the second leg on Wednesday next week, and the winner of the two-match aggregate will advance to the round of 16.

During the five direct confrontations between the two teams in the Champions League, Dortmund won four times, compared to one victory for Sporting.

Dortmund recorded its first victory under the leadership of its Croatian coach Niko Kovac, who succeeded the Turkish Nuri Sahin in coaching the team.

Kovac started his career with Dortmund with a 2-1 loss to Stuttgart last Saturday in the Bundesliga.
