Gulf 26: First day matches end in a positive draw

The matches of the first day of the 26th Gulf Cup in Kuwait ended in a positive draw, as Kuwait faced Oman and Qatar faced the Emirates.

The Kuwaiti national team settled for a 1-1 draw against its Omani counterpart in the opening match of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup Football Championship, today, Saturday.

Kuwait national team did not take advantage of its lead in the score in front of its fans at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, with a goal scored by Yousef Nasser in the 34th minute.

Oman national team equalized with a goal by Issam Al-Subhi in the 42nd minute, so each team got a point at the start of their journey in Group One.

The Kuwaiti national team also failed to break a historical complex, as it has not achieved victory over its Omani counterpart for 26 years, since winning 5-1 on November 9, 1998 in the 14th Gulf Championship.

After that, the Omani national team achieved 10 victories, and the two teams tied 5 times, in various continental and Gulf tournaments.

The Kuwaiti national team will play its second match against the UAE next Tuesday, while the Omani national team will meet Qatar, the champion of the last two editions of the Asian Cup.

The Kuwaiti team took control of the ball but without any real threat to the goal in the first half hour of the match, as the Omani defenders were massed in front of their fellow goalkeeper.

UAE and Qatar draw

The UAE national team also tied with its Qatari counterpart 1-1 in the first round of Group 1 of the Arabian Gulf Cup for Football.

Qatar took the lead through Akram Afif from a penalty kick in the 17th minute, before Yahya Al-Ghassani equalised for the UAE team in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half.

This was the second draw in the tournament, after the opening match between the host country, Kuwait, and its Omani counterpart ended 1-1.

The Qatari team will meet its Omani counterpart next Tuesday in the second round, which is the round in which the UAE team will meet Kuwait.
