Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa is expected to visit Saudi Arabia on Sunday, Al Arabiya reported.

This will be Shara's first official visit abroad since taking power after leading the opposition campaign that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December.

This visit is of special importance as it is the first foreign visit of the Syrian President. During it, issues of interest to the relationship between the two countries will be discussed.

The capital, Riyadh, was the destination of the first visit outside the country by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad Al-Sheibani, earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister visited Damascus on January 24 and said the kingdom was in talks with Europe and the United States to help lift economic sanctions on Syria that have devastated its economy.

The new Syrian administration announced last Wednesday the appointment of Sharaa as president of the country during the transitional period, in addition to other decisions including the dissolution of the armed factions and security services that existed during the previous era, the People's Assembly, and the Baath Party that ruled the country for decades, and the cancellation of the previous constitution.

On Thursday, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent congratulatory cables to Al-Sharaa on the occasion of his assumption of the presidency of the country in the transitional phase, wishing him success, according to what was reported by the official Saudi Press Agency "SPA".
