Human rights sources reported that the suffering of the inmates of the central prison in Shabwa Governorate (southeast Yemen) has worsened due to the government’s suspension of food allowances for more than two months.

The head of the Damir Foundation for Rights and Freedoms, Nasser Al-Khalifi, said on Wednesday, "More than 175 inmates of the Shabwa Central Prison have been suffering since the Ministry of Finance stopped the food allocations for inmates of the Shabwa Central Prison more than two months ago."

In a post on his Facebook page, Al-Khalifi appealed to the Prison Service, the Ministry of Finance, and the leadership of the local authority to find urgent solutions and solve the problem of the interruption of food for inmates.

The Yemeni government is suffering from a stifling financial crisis due to the halt in oil exports as a result of Houthi attacks on export platforms, and for several months it has been unable to pay employees’ salaries and fulfill its obligations in many government institutions and facilities.
