The Republic of Yemen welcomed the decision of the United Nations General Assembly calling on the International Court of Justice to issue a legal opinion regarding Israel’s ban on the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Palestine.

The Yemeni Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution submitted by Norway in partnership with Yemen and other countries, which included a request for an urgent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the Israeli entity’s violation, as the occupying power, of its obligations related to the activities and presence of the United Nations and other countries in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Ministry called for the speedy completion of the necessary procedures for this, in light of the crimes and violations suffered by the Palestinian people.

The statement stressed the need for the international community to move to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression, provide urgent humanitarian and relief aid to the Palestinian people, and achieve their legitimate aspirations for security, stability, and a decent life.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution related to UNRWA, affirming “full support for the Agency’s mandate in all its fields of work, namely Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territory.”

The General Assembly resolution condemned the legislation adopted by the Israeli Knesset on 28 October 2024 on the ban, and called on the Israeli government to “abide by its international obligations and respect the privileges and immunities of the Agency.”

Israel claims that UNRWA employees support Hamas, a claim denied by the agency, which the United Nations has affirmed its commitment to neutrality, while the Palestinians say that Tel Aviv's goal is to liquidate the agency and the refugee issue.

It is noteworthy that implementing the Israeli legislation will mean the cessation of UNRWA’s work in the occupied Palestinian territories, which means further deepening the process of starving the Palestinians and deteriorating their current tragic conditions.

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 152,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and elderly people.

Israel continues its massacres, ignoring two arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court on November 21 against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza.
