Barcelona tops La Liga, defeats Real Sociedad 4-0

Barcelona took the lead in the Spanish Football League after beating Real Sociedad, who had a player shortage, 4-0 on Sunday, in the 26th round of the league.

Barcelona decided the match in the first half, taking advantage of the red card of Sociedad defender Aretz Elustondo in the 16th minute, scoring two goals through Gerard Martin (25) and Marc Casado (28), before doubling the score in the second half thanks to Uruguayan captain Ronald Araujo (56) and Polish Robert Lewandowski (60).

Lewandowski (36 years old) strengthened his lead in the league's top scorers list with 21 goals in 25 matches, ahead of French Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe (17 goals).

This is the sixth consecutive victory for the Catalan club in the league, in a series in which it achieved victory over Valencia 7-1, Alaves 1-0, Sevilla 4-1, Rayo Vallecano 1-0, Las Palmas 2-0, and finally Sociedad.

Barcelona, who prepared in the best possible way for their European qualification on Wednesday against Benfica of Portugal in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, have not tasted defeat in the league since their home defeat on December 21 against Atletico Madrid 1-2 in the 18th round.

Barcelona tightened their grip on the last half hour and threatened their opponents' goal more than once, with substitute Torres coming close to adding a fifth goal on two occasions.

Leganes beat their guest Getafe 1-0, with a goal scored by Diego Garcia in the second minute of stoppage time.
