Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi suddenly dismissed Major General Abbas Kamel from the General Intelligence Service today, Wednesday, and issued a decision appointing him as an advisor and general coordinator of the security services and a special envoy to the president, an honorary position without powers.
Sisi appointed Hassan Mahmoud Rashad as head of the General Intelligence Service to succeed Abbas. He is a graduate of the Military Technical College and has held various positions in the Intelligence Service until he became the agency’s deputy.
Abbas Kamel was assigned to manage the General Intelligence Service on January 18, 2018, and took the constitutional oath as head of the agency before Sisi on June 28 of the same year.
Abbas served as Sisi's office director when the latter was head of military intelligence during the era of the late ousted president Hosni Mubarak, and Minister of Defense during the era of the late elected president Mohamed Morsi.
