The Sudanese army announced, on Wednesday morning, that its forces had advanced on combat fronts in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, at the expense of the "Rapid Support" forces.

The army's 6th Infantry Division said in a statement about Tuesday's operations, "The warplanes destroyed the Rapid Support Militia's hideouts, and our forces continue to advance steadily."

She continued: "In a successful qualitative operation, the warplanes were able to target a group of Rapid Support Militia coming from East Darfur, and eliminated their moving elements in the area."

Since May 10, 2024, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have been clashing in El Fasher, which is the center of humanitarian operations for the five states of Darfur.

The Sixth Division reported that "army forces carried out a precise operation on the western axis of El Fasher, which led to the destruction and seizure of a combat vehicle loaded with ammunition."

"The warplanes were also able to destroy 8 Rapid Support Forces combat vehicles, kill 33 militia members and injure others, and destroy a heavy cannon and an ammunition depot northeast of Al-Fasher," according to the statement.

The division added that "the joint forces (Darfur movements that signed the 2020 peace agreement) succeeded in eliminating a force that recently attacked Zamzam camp, killing 34 Rapid Support Forces and wounding 14 others."

Until 07:00 GMT, the Rapid Support Forces have not commented on what the army announced.

For days, and at an accelerating pace, the areas of control of the "Rapid Support" have been decreasing in favor of the army in the central states (Khartoum and Al-Jazeera) and the southern states (White Nile and North Kordofan) bordering the Darfur region to the west (5 states), and the "Rapid Support" controls 4 states there, while the war has not extended to the north and east of the country.

In Khartoum State, which consists of three cities, the army now controls 90 percent of the city of Bahri to the north, most parts of the city of Omdurman to the west, and 60 percent of the depth of the city of Khartoum, which is in the middle of the state and contains the presidential palace and the international airport, and which are almost surrounded by army forces, while the Rapid Support Forces are still in the neighborhoods east and south of the city.

Since mid-April 2023, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and about 15 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities, while research by American universities estimated the number of dead at about 130,000.
