A recent international report confirmed that food insecurity in Yemen is expected to continue to worsen during February.
"Food insecurity is expected to worsen between January and February 2025 as the dry season intensifies and food prices rise," said the joint monitoring report , issued Friday by six UN agencies and international organizations.
“The risk of frost is also expected to increase in the Yemeni highlands, especially in Sana’a and Dhamar, threatening agricultural livelihoods. Dry conditions will continue, exacerbating water shortages and hindering crop growth, while the likelihood of locust infestations remains low,” he added.
The report stated that according to the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan for 2025, the total number of people who will suffer from food insecurity during the current year at the crisis level ( IPC Phase 3 ) or worse outcomes will reach 17.1 million people in most Yemeni governorates, including 5.1 million people who will suffer from critical levels of acute food insecurity, at the emergency level ( IPC Phase 4 ).
He pointed out that of the total, 12.4 million people (73%) live in governorates under Houthi control, and another 4.7 million (27%) in areas under the influence of the internationally recognized government.
The report indicated that 3.3 million people live in areas at risk of deteriorating to emergency levels of food insecurity or worse, according to the Joint Monitoring Report model issued in December 2024.
It is noteworthy that the report is the product of a joint team that includes members of the UN agencies: FAO, UNICEF, WFP, and WHO, in addition to the World Bank, and the Capacity Assessment Project ( ACAPS ) organization. It is an update issued every two months to monitor the risks of the food and nutrition security crisis in Yemen.
