Meteorology warns of continued rain
The Meteorology and Early Warning Center of the General Authority of Civil Aviation warned, on Tuesday, that a number of Yemeni governorates will continue to be affected by heavy thunderstorms and strong winds in the coming days.
The center stated in its daily bulletin that satellite images, numerical model outputs, upper atmosphere layers, and surface observations indicate the continuation of heavy thunderstorms, some of which are accompanied by hail, on the highlands, slopes, and western coastal plains.
The center also expected that rain of varying intensity, some of which will be thundery and accompanied by strong winds, will continue to fall on parts of the deserts, highlands, plateaus and coasts of the governorates of (Al Mahrah, Hadhramaut, Shabwa, Abyan and Lahj).
Pointing out that heavy rains will fall on “parts of the governorates of (Al Bayda, Al Jawf, Ma’rib, Al Dhale’e and Aden), and strong winds that will raise sand and dust on the Socotra Archipelago, the southern coasts and areas located within the range of thunderclouds.
The National Center of Meteorology and Early Warning warned citizens and drivers against being in valleys and flood channels and driving on slippery muddy roads in areas where rain is expected.
He called on citizens to stay away from electricity poles, billboards and trees, and to turn off mobile phones during thunderstorms, and to avoid wind activity that raises sand and dust during thunderstorms and rainfall and in areas within the range of thunderclouds.
On August 11, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that it had recorded 57 deaths and 16 injuries as a result of heavy rains and floods that have hit several Yemeni regions over the past 13 days.
