Real Madrid to regain the lead
Real Madrid are set to go top of La Liga if they beat Las Palmas on Sunday, after Atletico surprisingly lost 1-0 to lowly Leganes on Saturday after 15 straight wins.
Diego Simeone's side remain top with 44 points, one point ahead of second-placed Real Madrid and third-placed Barcelona, who visit Getafe later today.
Leganes scored the winner from a corner kick in the 50th minute when Dani Raba played a cross from the left side, and defender Matija Nastasic rose and headed it into the net.
Atletico dominated the match, with over 60% possession, and were denied three goals by the woodwork, and had twice as many attempts on goal as their rivals throughout the match, but paid the price for missing opportunities, including a penalty kick that Antoine Griezmann took off the pitch in stoppage time.
"We didn't go into the game in good shape, we lacked energy, we weren't at the level we should have been, we had chances, but when you don't approach the game properly the goals don't come," Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told DAZN.
Atletico had won their last 15 matches in all competitions before today's match, the longest winning streak in their history, breaking the previous record set by Atletico also under Simeone in 2011-2012 when they achieved 13 consecutive victories.
Atletico have not lost since late October when they were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis, but suffered a shock defeat at 15th-placed Leganes, who are five points above the relegation zone.
