The Sudanese army announced today, Saturday, that it had regained control of the neighborhoods of the Haj Youssef area, the largest residential area in Khartoum, from the Rapid Support Forces.

The army said in a statement that its forces "are advancing on the Haj Youssef axis and clearing citizens' homes and civilian objects from the Rapid Support Militia."

The army broadcast video clips of its soldiers inside Haj Youssef in the East Nile area, announcing their liberation of the area’s neighborhoods. Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that army forces were deployed in Al-Shaqla, Haj Youssef, and Al-Rawasi Market.

Witnesses said that the Rapid Support Forces retreated to other areas in East Nile, near Al-Manshiya Bridge, linking Khartoum and East Nile.

On Friday, the Sudanese army announced that it had taken control of the Kafouri neighbourhood, east of the city of Bahri, north of Khartoum.

Today, activists posted on social media video clips of the army taking control of the Rapid Support Forces Command and Control Center in Kafouri neighborhood. This headquarters was previously the headquarters of the Operations Authority of the General Intelligence Service.

With these developments, the army is close to taking full control of the city of Bahri and East Nile.

Currently, the army controls most of the city of Omdurman and Bahri, while some parts of downtown Khartoum, including the presidential palace, remain under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, in addition to the eastern and southern neighborhoods of Khartoum.

On January 29, the Sudanese army announced its control over the center of the city of Bahri, north of Khartoum, including the Mak Nimr Bridge linking Khartoum and Bahri for the first time in 21 months.

This came two days after the army announced the lifting of the siege on the Signal Corps headquarters in Bahri and the General Command headquarters in central Khartoum, for the first time in 21 months.

Since mid-April 2023, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and about 15 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities.
