Security Council calls for comprehensive political process in Syria

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a statement on the political transition in Syria, 10 days after the overthrow of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
In a written statement issued late Tuesday evening, the Council called for a comprehensive Syrian-led political process that meets the aspirations of the Syrians and enables them to determine their future democratically based on the basic principles of Resolution 2254.
At the end of a session attended by UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, the Security Council called on Syria and its neighbors to refrain from any actions that would undermine regional security.
The statement stressed the importance of combating terrorism in Syria and preventing ISIS and other so-called terrorist groups from re-establishing their capabilities and working to deprive them of a safe haven in the country.
Council members stressed their “strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, and called on all States to respect these principles,” and called for additional international support to increase humanitarian support to civilians in need throughout Syria.
The council issued the statement after Pedersen warned during the same session that despite the ouster of Assad, "the conflict is not over" in Syria.
The UN envoy visited Syria and met with the commander-in-chief of the new political administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Sharaa pledged that the new Syria would be for all its components, and he promised a new constitution and elections.
