The Houthi militia has begun imposing new fees on litigants before courts in areas under its control, in a move that has sparked widespread criticism.
A document obtained by the Yemeni Youth Net website revealed that one of the litigants was obligated to pay an amount exceeding six thousand riyals under the name of the “Judicial Support Fund,” which is a new fund created by the militia in recent weeks as part of a series of measures to impose illegal levies and taxes.
This measure comes after the Houthi militia pledged to make a "radical change" about a year and a half ago, but observers believe that these steps fall within the framework of extortion campaigns aimed at financing the group's activities.
According to the document, the new fees constitute more than a third of the fees previously imposed on cases brought before the courts, while the exact percentage of the Judicial Support Fund from the total fees remains unclear.
