Today, Sunday, the city of Taiz (southwest of Yemen) witnessed a massive march by teachers demanding a wage restructuring and salary increases.

A Yemeni Youth Net correspondent said that hundreds of teachers and academics at Taiz University and other government sectors gathered this morning at Al-Awadhi roundabout on Jamal Street in the center of the city, and led a march to the governorate building.

He added that the protesters raised slogans and chanted slogans demanding regular teachers' salaries, improved wages, and the payment of annual allowances in line with the high cost of living.

The Teachers' Union in Taiz announced yesterday the return to the strike, and called on all teachers, both male and female, educators, parents, students, unions and civil society organizations to participate in the march in order to achieve the rights demands and unify the educational ranks and thwart any agenda that might seek to divert the rights demands and fragment the teachers' ranks and highlight the civil spirit of Taiz and commitment to the civilized path.

The union held the local authority and the government responsible for the consequences of stopping studies and students’ academic achievement, especially male and female students in the final stage of high school.

As protests continued,Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, yesterday evening, Saturday, to take the necessary measures to improve the conditions of male and female teachers.

The measures include "prioritizing the disbursement of teachers' salaries on time every month, approving appropriate increases in teachers' salaries, and approving the rights and allowances due to the 2025 budget," according to the Yemeni News Agency "Saba."

In his directives, Bin Mubarak stressed the need to address the existing duplication of jobs and absences in education, and to discuss ways to unify the interventions of local authorities in a way that contributes to supporting teachers’ salaries in the public sector in a consistent manner, and to provide free medical and educational services to teachers and their families in hospitals and government educational institutions.
